The short answer
They are two different places about twenty minutes apart. The Blue Hole is a chain of deep spring-fed pools you jump and swim in; Dunn's River Falls is a wide limestone staircase of water you climb. If you can only pick one, take Dunn's River on a first visit and the Blue Hole on a second — and if you are driving from Montego Bay, take a trip that does both.
Why everybody mixes them up
Both are near Ocho Rios. Both are turquoise water in green jungle. Both get photographed from the same angles. And both get described as “the waterfall tour” by people who booked one and saw the other.
They could hardly be less alike in practice. One is vertical and cold and asks you to jump; the other is horizontal and warm and asks you to walk uphill through water holding a stranger's hand.

The Blue Hole in detail
Inland and uphill from Ocho Rios, the Blue Hole is a sequence of pools stepped down through limestone and shaded by jungle. A local guide walks you up it, pointing out which ledges are safe to jump from and how deep the water is under each one. There is a rope swing over the main pool and a ladder to get out of it.
Nothing is compulsory, which is the important part. Plenty of visitors spend the hour swimming and photographing and leave the jumping to somebody else. Secret Falls sits in the same valley and is quieter again.
Dunn's River Falls in detail
Dunn's River Falls does not drop; it steps. Roughly 180 feet of height is spread over about 600 feet of terraced limestone, with most tiers shin to waist deep and flat pools in between. That shape is the whole reason it can be climbed.
A falls guide links the group hand to hand and leads from the front, setting the pace and choosing the footholds. It takes a little over an hour. A dry stairway runs the full height alongside, so anyone who would rather not scramble follows the group up it and meets them at the top. The river reaches the sea at the bottom, which means the climb finishes on a beach.
Which one, if you can only do one
- First visit to Jamaica: Dunn's River Falls. It is the image you have already seen, and doing it is better than looking at it.
- Been before, or travelling with teenagers: the Blue Hole. Fewer people, more adrenaline, and it feels like somewhere you found.
- Nervous in deep water: Dunn's River, without hesitation.
- Not keen on crowds: the Blue Hole, or Dunn's River on a day with no ships alongside.
- With small children: Dunn's River, and use the stairway if the climb looks like too much.
Why the answer from Montego Bay is usually “both”
Here is the arithmetic. From Montego Bay, either one costs you about four hours in a vehicle. Doing one alone means paying that road tax for ninety minutes of water. Doing both means paying it once for three hours.
That is why the full-day combination outsells either on its own from this side of the island. It includes admission to both, skips the ticket queue at each, adds Secret Falls, and puts about three hours in the water for From $140 per person.
The third option nobody books
Secret Falls sits in the same valley as the Blue Hole and is the quietest of the three. It is smaller, greener and far less photographed, and it usually appears as a middle stop on the full-day combination rather than as a trip of its own.
If the Blue Hole feels too energetic and Dunn's River too busy, Secret Falls is the answer to a question most visitors never think to ask. It is also the reason the eight-hour day is better value than it looks: three stops, one road tax.
Doing it as a half day from Ocho Rios
Everything above assumes you are driving from Montego Bay. If you are staying in Ocho Rios, or arriving by ship there, the maths inverts completely: both are ten to twenty minutes away, and a half-day trip covering one of them plus a river leaves your afternoon free.
That is the shape locals would recommend — one water stop in the morning, the beach or a boat afterwards, and nobody spending four hours in a vehicle. Things to Do covers what fills the second half of that day.
Timing, and the cruise-ship effect
Dunn's River is busiest when ships are alongside at Ocho Rios, which bunches arrivals into the middle of the morning. A trip that reaches the falls in the early afternoon frequently gets a calmer climb than one that races to be first through the gate.
The Blue Hole never sees coach traffic on that scale, so time matters less there — though the water is at its warmest, and the ledges at their most inviting, later in the day. Both are open in the rain, and both are worth doing in it: you are already wet, the jungle is greener and the crowds thin out.
What to bring for either
- Water shoes. Not negotiable at either place.
- A waterproof phone case, or leave the phone in the vehicle.
- Swimwear under your clothes, a towel and a dry change.
- Small notes for the guides, who work for their tips.
- Nothing you mind losing. Both involve water and neither involves pockets.
