This is the long day, and it is the one most first-time visitors to Montego Bay end up taking. You leave early, drive east along the coast for about two hours, and spend the middle of the day working through the three best-known stretches of water on the north coast before driving home.
The order matters. The Blue Hole and Secret Falls come first, inland and uphill, while everybody is fresh. Dunn's River Falls comes afterwards, on the coast, which puts the beach at the end of the day rather than the middle.
The Blue Hole and Secret Falls
The Blue Hole is a chain of spring-fed pools stepped down through limestone and jungle above Ocho Rios. A guide walks you up the sequence, showing which ledges are deep enough to jump from; there is a rope swing over the main pool and a ladder to get out of it.
Secret Falls sits in the same valley and is the quieter of the two. Nothing on either is compulsory — plenty of travellers swim, photograph and leave the jumping to somebody else.
Climbing Dunn's River Falls
Dunn's River Falls does not drop, it steps: about 180 feet of height spread over roughly 600 feet of terraced limestone. A falls guide links your group hand to hand into a chain and leads from the front, stopping in the wide pools between tiers.
It takes a little over an hour at a steady pace. A dry stairway runs the full height alongside, so anyone who would rather not scramble can follow the group up and meet them at the top. The river reaches the sea at the bottom, so the climb finishes on a beach.
The jerk stop and Columbus Park
Lunch is a stop at a roadside jerk eatery, and you buy your own. It is a good stop — this is the food people remember from Jamaica — but carry cash for it because it is not inside the fare.
There is also a brief pause at Columbus Park on the way, which is a photograph and a leg-stretch rather than an attraction.
