What does one free day look like?
If you have exactly one day and you have never been to Jamaica, take it east. The full-day run to the Blue Hole and Dunn's River Falls is the day people fly home talking about, and it packages the two gate fees, the drive and about three hours in the water into one booking.
If you have one day and you have been before, go inland instead. The Westmoreland countryside gives you the island the coast road never shows, and it finishes with a meal rather than a queue.
Can you do two trips in one day?
Only if one is a genuine half day and the other is close. The pattern that works is a morning river trip within an hour of the city, then the beach or a sunset drive in the afternoon.
What does not work is two booked excursions. Pickup windows shift, stops run long when everyone is enjoying themselves, and the second driver will not wait. Book one thing and let the day breathe around it.
What fits inside a cruise-ship window?
Ships call at Montego Bay and at Falmouth, and the two give you different options. Both piers are served by operators who collect about thirty minutes after docking and return you with time in hand.

Three days, the version with the least driving
- Day one: the Hip Strip, Doctor's Cave Beach and an early night. Nothing booked.
- Day two: a morning on the Great River at Lethe — rafting plus the limestone foot massage — and the pool afterwards.
- Day three: a catamaran over the reef inside the marine park, with snorkelling and the sail back.
Total road time across three days: under three hours. This is the shape for anyone travelling with small children, anyone who dislikes vehicles, and anyone who came here to rest.
Three days, the version with the most variety
- Day one: the full day east — Blue Hole, Secret Falls and the falls at Ocho Rios. Do it first, while you are fresh.
- Day two: the adventure park at Sandy Bay, where one pass covers horses, ziplines, ATVs and two catamarans.
- Day three: west to the Westmoreland countryside, finishing at the Negril cliffs for sunset.
That is roughly fifteen hours of vehicle across three days, and it covers waterfalls, adrenaline, countryside and the west coast. It is a lot. Book the rest day on day four.
How do you fill a week without repeating yourself?
Alternate. Two full days in a row is where holidays turn into itineraries, and the north coast rewards a rhythm of one big day, one small one.

What does a good day look like from each base?
The same coast produces four different holidays depending on which town you wake up in, and the sensible plan changes with it.
From Montego Bay, the near ring is yours: the Great River at Lethe before lunch, or the Martha Brae an hour east, and Rose Hall as a short afternoon when you want something dry. The full day goes east.
From Negril, reverse it. The Westmoreland countryside is on your doorstep and Rick's Cafe needs no booking at all; anything east becomes a serious drive, so make it one big day rather than three medium ones.
From Falmouth or Trelawny you are unusually well placed. The Martha Brae is minutes away, the Rio Bueno is on the same side, and both halves of the coast are within reach without either being a slog.
From Ocho Rios, the waterfalls are a half day rather than a full one, which frees an afternoon every single day. Use the spare time for the beach, a catamaran, or the drive inland that everybody staying further west has to sacrifice a whole day for.
Where does a Kingston day fit?
Only into a week, and only if the music is why you came. Three to four hours each way makes it a twelve-hour proposition, and it has to sit between two easy days or it swallows three.

What should arrival day be?
Nothing booked. Immigration is unpredictable, the flight may be late, and the one thing worth arranging in advance is the transfer from Sangster International to your hotel.
Beyond that: the beach, the strip after five, and an early night, because the good excursions collect between half past six and half past seven in the morning.
What should departure day be?
Also nothing booked. The coast road is single-carriageway for most of its length and a delay anywhere propagates the whole way. A morning excursion on the day you fly is the one genuinely avoidable risk in a Jamaican holiday.
If your flight is late in the evening and you cannot bear a wasted day, keep it to the strip and a beach within walking distance of the hotel.
How early do the pickups really start?
Full-day trips east collect between about 6:30 and 7:30 in the morning, and the further from the city you are staying the earlier that gets. Half-day river trips are usually mid-morning. Catamarans often run in the afternoon.
On the adventure parks, the time you choose at checkout is your arrival at the park; collection begins 30 to 90 minutes before it. The operator confirms the real window, usually the day before.
How much road time is too much?
A useful rule for this coast: keep vehicle time under half the day, and never plan two long-drive days back to back.
Four hours of road for three hours of water is a fair trade once in a week and a poor one twice over. It is also why the combination trips exist — they are the market's own answer to the same arithmetic.
What does a rest day look like here?
A rest day on this coast is not an empty one, and treating it as wasted is how people come home tired. The pattern that works: no pickup, no schedule, and one small thing in the afternoon.
The strip covers it easily. A morning on the sand, lunch somewhere with a view, an afternoon walk along Gloucester Avenue and a sunset that costs nothing. If you want a little structure, a great house tour east of the city is ninety minutes including the taxi both ways.
Where a rest day earns its keep is the day after a full one. Eight hours in a vehicle and three in the water leaves most people flatter than they expect, and a second big day stacked on top is where a holiday stops being one.
The other rest day worth protecting is the one before a long excursion. A late night on the strip and a six-thirty pickup is a combination that ruins a good trip, and it is entirely avoidable with one look at the schedule.
Which day should be the beach day?
The day after the biggest excursion, and the day before departure. Both are days you want no schedule on, and Doctor's Cave Beach is a short walk from most hotels in the city.
If you want a beach with a boat attached, the catamaran trips do the job and still count as a light day — four hours, mostly sitting down.
