Things to Do in Montego Bay

Sorted by how far you have to drive, because on this coast that is what decides your day.

Start with what you can walk to

Gloucester Avenue — the Hip Strip — runs about a mile along the waterfront and is the one stretch of the city you can genuinely do on foot. Bars, craft stalls, jerk shacks and beach clubs sit shoulder to shoulder, and most hotels in the city are either on it or a short taxi from it.

Doctor's Cave Beach is the strip's reason for existing. The bathing club that made the bay famous in the 1920s still runs it, the water is flat and clear, and loungers and umbrellas are hired at the gate. Two smaller beaches, Cornwall and Dead End, sit either side of it for anyone who wants fewer people.

Give the strip an evening rather than a day. It is at its best after five, when the heat drops and the music starts.

The beaches, and what each is for

Snorkelling from the sand is reasonable at Doctor's Cave on a calm day. The better water is offshore inside Montego Bay Marine Park, which is where the catamarans anchor and why a boat trip is worth the mask rather than just the ride.

Rose Hall and the great houses

Twenty minutes east of the city, Rose Hall stands above the coast road: a restored Georgian great house from the plantation era, and the most visited historic building on this side of the island. Its fame rests as much on the legend of Annie Palmer, the “White Witch” said to have murdered three husbands, as on the architecture. The legend is a nineteenth-century story rather than documented history, and the guides tell it as such.

Greenwood Great House sits a little further east and is the quieter, more genuinely historical of the two, with a collection of instruments and furniture still in the family that built it. Both run guided tours; the evening candlelight tour at Rose Hall is the one people remember.

Within an hour: Lethe, Falmouth and the Cockpit Country

This is the ring where a half day works and the whole afternoon survives.

Lethe, on the Great River, is 25 to 40 minutes inland and is where the bamboo rafting closest to the city happens, complete with a limestone foot massage at the end of the run. Falmouth, about an hour east, is a Georgian port town with the best-preserved street grid in the Caribbean and the cruise pier that brings ships to this coast. The Martha Brae runs just inland of it.

Behind all of it rises the Cockpit Country, a limestone landscape of sinkholes and conical hills that is where the ATV and UTV safaris spend their morning. It is also Maroon country, settled by communities who won their independence from the British in the eighteenth century and still hold it.

Within two hours: Negril, Ocho Rios and the waterfalls

West to Negril takes about ninety minutes and gives you Seven Mile Beach in the afternoon and the West End cliffs in the evening. Rick's Cafe is the cliff bar everyone means when they say sunset in Negril — divers, a house band, and a crowd that arrives an hour before the sun does. Two of the ATV trips on this coast finish there deliberately.

East to Ocho Rios is nearer two hours, and it is where the waterfalls are. Dunn's River Falls is the terraced climb everyone has seen photographed; the Blue Hole is the chain of jumping pools inland of it. Doing either from here means giving up the day, which is why the trips that go bundle two or three stops together.

The Westmoreland countryside behind Negril is the third option in this ring, and the one most visitors never consider: village roads, a mineral spring, a licensed ganja farm and lunch cooked where you stop.

The full-day reach: Kingston

Kingston is three to four hours away across the island, which makes it a twelve-hour proposition from a north-coast hotel. People still do it, and they do it for one reason: the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road, the house where he lived and recorded. Devon House and its ice cream usually come with it.

Whether the drive earns itself is a real question, and the Bob Marley and reggae page answers it properly rather than in a sentence.

What a half day actually gets you

• A morning: bamboo rafting at Lethe, river tubing on the Rio Bueno, or an ATV run in the hills. All within an hour, all back by lunch.
• An afternoon: a catamaran over the reef, the Hip Strip and Doctor's Cave, or Rose Hall and a great house.
• An evening: the cliffs at Negril, or the strip after five.
• A whole day, and worth it: the Ocho Rios waterfalls, the Chukka park pass, or the Westmoreland countryside.
• A whole day, only if you really want it: Kingston.
