The short answer
Think in rings. Within an hour of the city sit Lethe, Falmouth, the Martha Brae and the Rio Bueno — all half days. At ninety minutes west lie Negril and the cliffs; at two hours east, Ocho Rios and the waterfalls. Kingston is three to four hours across the island and is a full day by itself.
The city and the strip
Gloucester Avenue — the Hip Strip — runs a mile along the waterfront and is the only part of the coast you can genuinely walk. Doctor's Cave Beach is its centrepiece, with Cornwall Beach beside it and Dead End Beach at the north end for sunsets and low-flying aircraft.
Twenty minutes east, Rose Hall stands above the coast road: a restored Georgian great house with a ghost story attached and an evening candlelight tour that makes more of it than the daytime one does.
Within an hour: Lethe, Falmouth and Rio Bueno
This is the ring where a half day works and your afternoon survives.
Lethe, 25 to 40 minutes inland on the Great River, is the closest bamboo rafting to the city, and the raft captains finish the run with a foot massage using warmed limestone. The Martha Brae, about an hour east near Falmouth, is the classic version of the same thing: thirty feet of bamboo, a bench for two and an hour of green water.
Falmouth itself is a Georgian port town with the best-preserved street grid in the Caribbean and the pier that brings cruise ships to this coast. Rio Bueno, a little further on, is where the river tubing happens — and the run finishes by rafting out to a private beach rather than climbing back into a van.

West: Negril, the cliffs and the countryside
Ninety minutes west gets you Seven Mile Beach, which is exactly what it sounds like, and the West End cliffs, which are not. Rick's Cafe is the cliff bar everyone means when they say sunset in Negril: divers, a house band and a crowd that arrives an hour early. Two of the ATV trips on this coast finish there on purpose.
Inland of Negril is Westmoreland, and this is the part of the island most visitors never see. Village roads, a mineral spring you can swim in, small licensed farms and lunch cooked where you stop. It is the countryside the ATV and UTV safaris were built for.
East: Ocho Rios and the waterfalls
Two hours east is where the photographs come from. Dunn's River Falls is the terraced climb; the Blue Hole is the chain of jumping pools twenty minutes inland of it; Secret Falls sits in the same valley and is quieter than either.
From Montego Bay all of that is a full day, which is why the trips that go bundle two or three stops together and include the gate fees. Doing one alone from here is possible and rarely worth the road. The rivers and waterfalls page sorts out which is which.
Across the island: Kingston
Three to four hours each way, and people still do it for one reason: the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road, the house he lived and recorded in. Devon House and its famous ice cream usually come with it.
The alternative pilgrimage is Nine Mile, up in the hills of St Ann, where he was born and is buried — about two hours rather than four. Which of the two earns the day depends on what you came for, and the Bob Marley and reggae page answers it properly.
Where the trips actually collect from
Direction matters for a second reason: pickup zones follow it. Almost everything on this coast collects from hotels, villas and Airbnbs in Montego Bay, and most of it reaches Negril and Falmouth as well. Several trips also collect at the cruise piers, usually about thirty minutes after a ship ties up.
What varies is the far end. A trip that leaves from Ocho Rios will not normally drive two hours west to fetch you, and a Falmouth-based operator may not come as far as Negril. Cruise passengers: what fits a ship day
Ships call at both Montego Bay and Falmouth, and the two produce different days. From Falmouth the Martha Brae and the Rio Bueno are on your doorstep, and the eastern half of the coast opens up. From Montego Bay the near ring works comfortably and the Ocho Rios waterfalls become a stretch.
Whichever pier you are on, give the ship name, the docking time and the re-boarding time when you book. Operators build the run around the sailing and will tell you plainly if a trip does not fit your window — which is a great deal better than finding out at four in the afternoon.
